A SCHOOL FOR ALL AGES
Ten Streets, Liverpool
BRIEF
To Design a 420 Pupil Primary School
The designated site was in the middle of the Ten Streets development zone, which is set to develop rapidly over the next 20 years. Therefore I thought it was important to create something that would fit in with future designs and also compliment the Strategic Renegeration Framework. One of the biggest problems was that it was adjacent to a busy A road, therefore it was essential that the playground and classrooms were as sheltered from noise and pollution.

By wrapping the classrooms around the perimeter of the site it creates a safe and secure outdoors space for the school. As there is an age range from 3-11 years it was important that there was a separate space for the Nursery and Reception, and also a quiet and noisy play area.

The SRF recognises that the area needs more greenery to improve the aesthetic and environmental aspect of the area. To do this whilst still having a hard playground for all year-round I incorporated a grassy green roof on the sloped hall to increase the space for children to play.
Increasing Time Spent Outdoors
I wanted to minimise indoor circulation space to reduce wasted footprint and increase time spent outside. Therefore the decks function is not only for circulation, but also for additional play space and classroom spill-out space. I envisioned the decks to be used to increase the flexibility of learning as some children do not cope well in enclosed environments, and for messy activities such as painting and making.
